Company Members

Dr. Chad Edgar originally hails from Columbus, Ohio, where he started performing at the age of seven in various community theatre productions and Columbus Ballet Met. He obtained his B.S. in both Biology and Chemistry from Otterbein College in 1997 in Westerville, Ohio, while performing in the college’s jazz company and VaudVillities. In 1998 he ventured forth to Miami and spent two years at the University of Miami for graduate studies in Biochemistry, while performing with DanceNow! and Jojo Vela Productions. Dr. Edgar began his journey with Jubilee Dance Theatre in 2003 while attending Nova Southeastern University, where he received his Doctorate of Pharmacy in 2005, graduating with highest honors. From 2005 to 2007, Chad completed a pharmacy practice management residency at the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kansas, while simultaneously earning a Master of Science in Hospital Pharmacy Administration. Dr. Edgar’s emphasis is in critical care and infectious disease, and he is the Clinical Coordinator for infectious diseases at Memorial Regional Hospital in Hollywood, Florida. Dr. Edgar is also a member of the National Scholars Honor Society and Who’s Who Among American Colleges and Universities. Chad is finally glad to be finished with his studies (WHEW!!!) and dancing with Jubilee Dance Theatre for yet another season! True! ;-)

Emilia Kawashima has been a member and a soloist with the University Center Children’s Ballet Theater Company for a number of years, where she has been featured in such productions as the Twelve Days of Christmas, The Toy Maker, Cirque Du Ballet and Alice and Wonderland.  Her classical ballet, jazz and modern training began at the University Center for the Performing Arts where she has trained with Barbara Sloan, Damaris Ferrer, and Lu Welters.  She has performed in Alfonsina: La Mujer en el Mar, a production from Flamenco in the Sun 2007 presented by the Bailes Ferrer Company.  Aside from her love of dance, Emilia’s interests include radio broadcasting, drawing and painting, and math.  She is currently attending Florida Atlantic University to study engineering and dance.  This is Emilia’s first season with Jubilee Dance Theatre.

Dawn Chaples-Nunez, native of Ft. Lauderdale, began her dance training at the young age of 5. She studied various forms of dance tap, modern, ballet and jazz with Jane Miles and Ken Samuels. By the age of 15, she decided to turn her interests to classical ballet and studied at Ballet Etudes of South Florida under the direction of Susana Prieto. She also trained with Ursino Del Valle who choreographed many works for the company. After leaving Ballet Etudes to attend college, she continued her training with Mr. Del Valle and performed for him on occasion. During this time, she received a Bachelor of Science in Communications and a Masters Degree in Special Education. She currently teaches full time for the Broward County Public School System. She is honored to have the opportunity to perform with JDT.   Mrs. Nunez performed many classical and contemporary works. Her performance credits include the Housekeeper, Toy Dolls, Snowflakes, Chocolate from Spain, and Coffee from Arabia in Nutcracker, Bertha and the Wilis in Giselle, The Countess and The Fairy of the Songbird in Sleeping Beauty, and the corps de ballet in Les Sylphides, as well as others. Her contemporary works include soloist in Six to Vivaldi, Principal in Presage de Malheur, and Principal in Delirium.

 

Athena Nobles was born in Bronx, New York and raised in Fort Lauderdale Florida.  Athena began dancing at the tender age of four studying African, Jazz, Ballet and Modern Dance.  Right out of high school, Athena won a dance scholarship to Broward Community, she earned two regional gold medals in dance for two consecutive years.  Since high school, Athena has traveled and performed with several dance companies: Tony Lardge Dance Theatre, Pfuzion (for which she is the Assistant Artistic Director) and TransZenDance.  She is a faithful and committed member of Divine Grace Dance Ministries at New Birth Baptist Church.  Ms. Nobles has appeared in videos and performances with many artist including: Missy Elliot, 50 Cent, Kirk Franklin, Vickie Winans, Tupac and M.C. Lyte.  Athena is currently developing dancers throughout South Florida with underprivileged children as well as working with dance competitions around the country. 

Pioneer Winter born in South Miami, FL and a graduate from STAR Academy (dance magnet of Dr. Michael M. Krop Senior  High) in 2006.  In 2007, Pioneer obtained his Bachelor of Arts from Florida International University.  He recently choreographed an adaptation of the musical Godspell, which was performed at the International Fringe Arts Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland. He has been working with Jubilee Dance Theatre, Inc. since 2005 and is now very happy to be a full company member.

 
Apprentices
 

Lillian Hill has been dancing since the age of six.  She began her training at Pro-Am Dance Studio studying ballet, jazz, tap, lyrical, and hip-hop. She has furthered her classical ballet training with Magda Aunon, performing "The Nutcracker" for the past two years as a member of Fort Lauderdale Ballet Classique.  Moreover, she trains at Dillard Center for the Arts with Hannah Baumgarten and Josee Garant, as well as guest artists Diego Salterini, Giovanni Luqquini, "Lu" Welters, and Daniel Cathack.     Additionally, she has attended summer intensives at Pine Crest School, Boca Ballet, and Orlando Ballet and has performed in numerous venues, including Universal Studios and Broward Center.  This past March, she attended the National High School Dance Festival at the University of the Arts (PA) and in May, she performed "La Bayadere" and received instruction at the S.E.R.B.A. Festival (NC).  She is currently in her second year as an apprentice with Jubilee Dance Theater.  This summer, she will participate in a five-week intensive with Joffrey Ballet (NY).  After graduation next year, Lilly plans to attend college, where she hopes to obtain a BFA and begin a successful career performing and choreographing.

Amaya Lewis was born in South Florida and began dancing at the age of 11. After being inspired by her best friend, she was encouraged to audition for Parkway Middle School’s performing arts dance program. Upon acceptance to the program, she began classes in ballet, jazz, modern, and salsa, under the instruction of Elaine Jeckles and Miriam Diaz. Also during this time, she trained for a year with Jack Bloeser in ballet, jazz, and tap, at Dynasty Academy of Dance in Margate, Fl.  Amaya decided to continue her dance training at Dillard Center for the Arts, where she received admission in the pre-professional dance program. Under the instruction of Hannah Baumgarten, Joseé Garant, and Diego Salterini, she currently receives training in classical ballet, the modern dance forms of Horton and Limón, and jazz. Exploring other fields in performing arts, Amaya acted in the Dillard presentations of Scrooge and Pippin the Musical. It was during her experiences that she met the director of Jubilee Dance Theatre, Luctricia Welters, who invited her to join the company as an apprentice; this is her second season as an apprentice with JDT.

Lanita Patton born and raised in Ft. Lauderdale, Fl, found her love of dance at the young age of five where she began training at Pro-Am Dance studio for nine years. Her training includes tap, jazz, ballet, lyrical, and acrobatics. Being a member of the Pro-Am Travel Performing Group for six years, she received the outstanding dedication award for two consecutive years and the Florence Cassidy Dance scholarship award. She has performed in the studio productions Chicago and Footloose. She has performed at Disney’s Universal Studios and Epcot. For several years she performed at the annual Holiday Parenting Show and the Winter Yuletide Parade. In 2007 Lanita performed at The Rock of Love Charity Event for children with diabetes. Lanita has attended several conventions and has been taught by choreographers such as Mia Michaels, Dave Scott, Shane Sparks, Laurie Ann Gibson, Barry Youngblood, and many more. While attending the Dance Caravan convention in Las Vegas she received the Professional Dance Teachers Association scholarship award. She is also a recipient of the Broadway Dance Center scholarship from the Dance Power Express National Dance Convention. She currently is a member of her school’s dance company; as well as president of the freshman/sophomore ensemble. This is her first year as an apprentice with Jubilee Dance Theater and she is thrilled and hoping for all the best in the future.

Brittany Tavares born and raised in Ft. Lauderdale, FL,  is currently entering her fourth year at Dillard Center for the Arts. Brittany trains with Hannah Baumgarten, Josée Garant, Lu Welters and Diego Salterini in areas of ballet, modern and modern jazz. Additionally, she studies at International Dance Academy under Debra Buttner and has had the privilege to perform in the Nutcracker as a Snowflake, Flower, and Spanish dancer. She has been an apprentice with Jubilee Dance Theatre for three seasons, assists with the Junior Ensemble, and the children's community classes. She has performed in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, Orange Bowl and Super Bowl half time events. Over the past several years Brittany has also performed at the Broward center for Performing Arts. She will continue her studies in school and dance, then plans to pursue dance in college.

Victoria Todd is a native of South Florida who began dance training at the age of three at the Sunrise Civic Center. Under the direction of Jane Miles she performed and took summer session for nine years. Also during this time she attended Parkway Middle School of the Arts studying under Elaine Jekels and Miriam Diaz.  Victoria  studied extensively with  MJM Dance Studio in Miramar, FL., where she received pre-professional ballet training  under the direction of Denyse Murguia and Katherine Marrero and participated in both dance competitions and annual recitals before leaving to attend the Dillard Center for the Arts. It was at Dillard that she met the director of JDT, Luctricia Welters, and became an apprentice of Jubilee Dance Theatre. As she continues her second season with JDT, she looks forward to attending Alvin Ailey's Junior Division Summer Dance Program for five weeks.
