Date: September 9, 2004 Contact: Jubilee Dance Theatre, Inc. Phone: 954-817-0664, 954-856-3627 REVISED FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Jubilee Dance Theatre celebrates its one-year anniversary as a South Florida-based multicultural dance company under the direction of Luctricia “Lu” Welters, former member of the Alvin Ailey Modern Dance Company in New York. Come be a part of history in the making as Jubilee Dance Theatre proudly presents the unveiling of the “Alvin Ailey” stamp by the United States Postmaster General – Opening Night, October 1, 2004. Alvin Ailey
was one of the leading choreographers of his era. His work helped forge a union
between ballet, modern, and jazz dance, and was often inflected with the rhythm
and feel of blues, gospel, and other aspects of African-American experience.
Originally an all-black company, Alvin Ailey provided a place for talented
dancers to perform when mainstream companies were resistant to hiring them.
Lu Welters continues Ailey’s mission through her vision, which has been
to express the art of dance by working with dancers from all backgrounds and
cultures and to develop a style of risk-taking choreography that’s heartfelt
and entertaining leaving the audience completely spellbound. The program, entitled “No Boundaries,” will be a combination of artistic expression through ballet, modern, jazz and hip-hop, and will include Jubilee Dance Theatre’s signature performance “Out of the Box” and premier performance “It Takes a Village.” Performances, which were previously scheduled for
September 10 and 11, have been postponed due to hurricane conditions and will be
at 7 pm on Friday, October 1 and Saturday, October 2.
These two performances will “kick-off” the second-year Anniversary
Celebration for the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center, 2650
Sistrunk Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale. As a non-profit corporation, Jubilee encourages and educates the community through a series of lecture demonstrations and dance classes. They currently offer free classes for adults and children at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center. These wonderful students from our community will be showcased in “It Takes a Village.” Tickets are $15.00 in advance and $20.00 at the door; a portion of the proceeds benefits the Friends of the Library. Tickets are now on sale at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center: Monday-Thursday: 5:30 p.m. – 7:45 p.m. Saturdays: 12:00 p.m. - 4:45 p.m. Get
